When we first arrived, the garden was split across three disconnected levels. The lower terrace was dominated by lawn, while the upper level was crowded with a shed, bike store, trampoline, artificial turf and a deep raised bed. Set on a steep hill, with steps running from the front of the house to the back, access was a challenge from the outset.

Our aim was to bring the garden together, creating a natural flow between levels and giving each space a clear purpose.

At ground level, we lifted and relaid the existing patio to create a level, well-drained surface. A generous dining terrace now centres around a bespoke outdoor kitchen and Asado grill, perfect for relaxed entertaining.

Above, a sun-soaked terrace provides space to unwind, complete with a hot tub and comfortable seating. Corten steel retaining walls define the levels, while clay pavers and limestone create continuity throughout. Generous planting softens the hard landscaping, spilling over edges and drawing the eye upwards.

At the highest level, a Shou Sugi Ban clad garden room houses a home gym, alongside a secluded sauna, outdoor shower and decking — creating a private wellness retreat for exercise and relaxation.

Layered planting beds and mature Arbutus unedo trees replace the need for turf, adding texture and year-round interest. Integrated irrigation keeps maintenance low, while carefully positioned lighting brings warmth and atmosphere after dark.

The result is a cohesive, multi-level garden that makes the most of its challenging setting, with dedicated spaces for cooking, entertaining, exercise and relaxation.
